INDAA Establishes Endowed Funds at Mercy High School and Mount de Sales Academy

The IND Alumnae Association has established two endowed scholarships—at Mercy High School and at Mount de Sales Academy—to support incoming students who have a family connection to the Institute of Notre Dame.

This lasting investment honors the rich history, values, and sisterhood of IND while helping young women continue a tradition of an all-girls Catholic education rooted in faith, excellence, and service. The combined $50,000 investment will allow students with a familial relationship to an IND alumna to continue their education at two schools that share a deep connection to the IND community.

“Although IND closed its doors, the spirit and legacy of IND live on through its alumnae, IND’s Alumnae Association as a nonprofit, and through the many women whose lives were shaped by a rigorous, Catholic, college preparatory education,” said
Debbie Henry, president of the INDAA and a member of IND’s Class of 1993. “These endowed funds are a meaningful way for us to provide immediate impact to students in our communities while also investing in the future, which is something very important to us. We are deeply grateful to Mercy High School and Mount de Sales Academy for helping us extend IND’s legacy to future generations.” For 173 years, the Institute of Notre Dame stood as a premier all-girls Catholic, college preparatory high school in Baltimore committed to developing women of discernment, active leadership, and lifelong learning. The historic campus notably remained a cultural anchor in Baltimore City until the school’s closure in June 2020.

“We are deeply grateful for the Institute of Notre Dame Alumnae Association’s generous gift and for its commitment to keeping the IND legacy alive,” said Mercy High School President
Mary Beth Lennon, a member of Mercy’s Class of 1985. “This scholarship will provide meaningful support to students and families while honoring the longstanding relationship between Mercy and IND. We may have been rivals on the basketball court for 54 years, but we will always be partners in Catholic education.”

Principal Sister Ann Dominic, O.P. of Mount de Sales Academy added, “The alumnae of the Institute of Notre Dame are advancing the cause of Catholic education for young women and leaving a lasting legacy through the generosity of this endowment. This gift brings hope and is a testament to the strong sisterhood emblematic of the IND Alumnae. What a blessing to see them put faith in future female leaders.”

The Spirit of IND lives on through the students and families who carry its legacy forward. Admissions teams at Mercy High School and Mount de Sales Academy will work with students whose families are connected to IND beginning with the 2026-27 school year, with the plan to disperse funds in the 2027-28 school year. The endowed funds will provide scholarship support in perpetuity, subject to each school’s additional scholarship policies and criteria.

The Institute of Notre Dame Alumnae Association, Mercy High School, and Mount de Sales Academy are grateful to the many IND alumnae and friends whose generosity makes this investment possible. The INDAA and both schools view these scholarships not simply as financial assistance, but as a lasting tribute to the many generations of women who have received a rigorous Catholic, college preparatory education in Baltimore, and to the enduring bonds of sisterhood formed within our greater community.

SSND Close Sale on Historic Institute of Notre Dame

Dear Alumnae of dear IND,

I am writing with some news about the Institute of Notre Dame. Since its closing in 2020, SSNDs and you, the IND alumnae, never wavered in their belief that IND still had the potential to improve people’s lives.

On December 6, 2024, the School Sisters of Notre Dame announced the sale of the IND property. From the very beginning of this process, the School Sisters wanted to be certain that the future of Caroline Center and the surrounding community would be taken into consideration when redeveloping this treasured building. With the professional assistance of Cushman and Wakefield, the development team of Severn Development Company and CAM Management were identified as the appropriate buyers who would preserve and respect the history of the School Sisters of Notre Dame and allow Caroline Center to remain in its location.

Since that time, much work has been done to create a plan for over 100 affordable housing units for seniors (age 62+) while preserving the IND building and legacy. The units will be surrounded by IND’s iconic tin ceilings, wood floors and decorative trim restored to its full beauty and additional renovations to meet 21st century building codes and mechanical systems.

We believe Severn Development Company and CAM Management are the right partners to rejuvenate the beloved IND by providing affordable housing for seniors and the opportunity for Caroline Center to continue as a workforce development center for women. The dream that the Institute of Notre Dame embraced on Aisquith Street in 1847, to provide educational opportunities for people to reach the fullness of their potential, will continue with this affordable housing opportunity and the Caroline Center sponsored ministry.

The closing of the sale will occur today, Tuesday, December 23, 2025—a date that will be remembered by many whose lives will improve because of this revitalized property.

Let us continue to pray for all involved in this project which will continue the spirit of Blessed Theresa and IND into the 21st century.

Christmas Blessings!

Congrats, Sue!

We are thrilled to announce that Sue Petti '74 is this year's winner of the Distinguished Alumna Award!  Sue was nominated by a fellow alum who said she is "the very definition of the 'Spirit of IND' - a loyal, compassionate, and tireless advocate for her alma mater.  A proud legacy alumna, Sue often shares that the best days of her life were those she spent as a student at IND.  That deep love has translated into more than five decades of active service and heartfelt commitment to the school and its community."

Furthermore, Sue was instrumental during IND's most difficult chapter - it's closure.  She served as president of the INDAA during that time and helped shape our non profit into what it is today.  It's safe to say that without Sue's guidance, leadership, and commitment, the INDAA would not be in existence.

Lastly, Sue's peer said "Sue's life is a testament to service, leadership, and compassion.  Whether through faith, profession, or recreation, she brings energy, warmth, and excellence to every endeavor - truly embodying the IND values in every sphere of her life."

Congratulations, Sue - this award is tremendously well deserved!
